2022 WSL Nazaré Tow Challenge Begins
Nazaré, Portugal – The 2022 WSL Nazaré Tow Challenge presented by Jogos Santa Casa is officially underway, with a 9 am start this morning. The world's top big wave surfers have gathered in Portugal to tackle the first big swell of the season.
Unique Bathymetry Creates Giant Waves
Nazaré is known for its massive waves, which are created by a unique underwater canyon that amplifies the power of incoming swells. The canyon causes the waves to break in shallow water, creating towering walls of water that can reach heights of over 100 feet.
The 2022 WSL Nazaré Tow Challenge will feature a field of 24 surfers, who will be towed into the waves by jet skis. The surfers will be judged on their wave selection, wave riding, and overall performance. The event will be broadcast live on the World Surf League website.
