Al Jazeera Journalist Killed in Israeli Airstrike

Gaza City, Palestine - An Al Jazeera journalist was killed in an Israeli airstrike on her home in the Gaza Strip, the news organization confirmed early Monday.

The slain journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, was a veteran reporter who had been working for Al Jazeera Arabic since 1997. She was shot while covering an Israeli military raid in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank.

Abu Akleh's death has been widely condemned by international organizations and human rights groups. The United Nations human rights office called for an independent investigation into her killing, and the International Federation of Journalists demanded that Israel be held accountable.

Israel has claimed that Abu Akleh was killed by Palestinian gunmen, but this claim has been disputed by witnesses and evidence. A preliminary investigation by the Palestinian Authority found that Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli fire.

The death of Abu Akleh is the latest in a series of attacks on journalists in the Gaza Strip. In 2018, two Palestinian journalists were killed in Israeli airstrikes, and in 2014, a Palestinian cameraman was killed by Israeli forces.
